Taking our agriculture to the next level

Organic fertilizers could be the beacon of what is possible

Update : 28 Dec 2025, 12:12 PM

With every passing year, Bangladesh’s population continues to grow, and with it, our demand for food security becomes ever more urgent. While we may talk of the numerous challenges we face and will continue to face, there is no challenge more urgent than ensuring that the people of a country are fed.

To that end, the breakthrough by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) - an organic fertilizer that improves soil health and boosts rice yields - could be an absolute revelation.

Our agricultural sector has long relied on heavy chemical inputs and faces its own share of challenges, from soil degradation, rising costs, and environmental damage.

As such, the newly developed fertilizer, which could potentially increase production by 10-20%, also reduces dependence on imported urea, thereby cutting costs for farmers and saving precious subsidy expenditures.

In a country where excessive urea wastage has polluted our waters and eroded our sustainability, such an innovation, if harnessed and allowed to reach its full potential, could be transformative and pave a path toward a more regenerative agriculture.

However, this is no time to celebrate, and it is caution that must guide its expansion. BRRI rightly notes that producing this fertilizer requires laboratory precision to ensure microbial balance. While commercial rollout is promising, rigorous testing and monitoring must remain central.

We must have full confidence that this product is safe, effective, and adaptable to diverse soils and climates. There is no option to scale up unless we are absolutely certain - we cannot have oversight risks undermining the very gains we seek.

Organic fertilizers could be the beacon of what is possible: Higher yields, healthier soils, and reduced costs. However, it is the broader strategy - of integrating regenerative methods, diversifying our crops, and investing more in modernizing our agriculture, that will yield the real reward of ensuring that Bangladesh can continue to feed its people.
