Fix the traffic problem, don’t add to it

Update : 02 Oct 2013, 05:38 PM

The PM’s return from the US with awards and accolades may be a valid reason to celebrate, but when it puts the entire capital on hold for hours and leads to the severest traffic congestion in the city’s recent history, it begs the question do her party activists and supporters really do what’s best for her?

With thousands of ordinary citizens stuck in tailbacks that reached as far as Uttara from Farmgate, a lot of resentment was generated forthe fanfare that accompanied her return. The inconvenience it caused commuters going to and from work, not to mention the material and financial damage to business with goods on the road, was considerable.

Many ambulances were stuck in the gridlock as well, as were people with other emergencies, all because AL activists blocked roads and held impromptu celebrations in the middle of major thoroughfares.

To add insult to injury, the metropolitan police joint commissioner for traffic, instead of issuing an apology for the inconvenience, stated that there was nothing extraordinarily bad about Monday evening’s traffic situation.

With elections coming up and the AL’s popularity on the wane, actions like these will cause the party’s remaining goodwill to rapidly erode, since it implies that our leaders are unconcerned about our welfare to the point of causing us unnecessary harm.
