Today, March 26, is a day when, collectively, we reflect on our past and simultaneously look towards the future of what we are yet to achieve.
Our Independence Day will always be a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Bangladeshis in the struggle for freedom. We must never disregard the courage displayed during the 1971 Liberation War, and its spirit must continue to inspire every subsequent generation.
As we prepare to honour the events of 1971, the day that began the nine-month long Liberation War against the oppressive Pakistani forces that led to countless lives being lost, there is, after what feels like decades, a palpable sense of cautious optimism in the country once again.
The events of July and August of 2024 have brought about an undeniable turning point in our journey as a nation. It was channeling the spirit of independence that countless took to the streets last year, demanding to uphold the principles of democracy, justice, and human rights -- values and rights that so many fought and died for in 1971.
In the aftermath of these events, we have, under the guidance of the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, embarked on a much-needed rebuild.
As wreaths of flowers are placed at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, let this symbolic act resonate deeply within us as we look to put aside our differences and forge a united path forward.
We must now draw strength from our history of resilience and unity in the face of adversity, and overcome the challenge that we face as a nation.
It is time to translate the spirit of independence into tangible progress for all Bangladeshis. The path ahead may be challenging, but the indomitable spirit that won independence in 1971 remains alive, ready to guide us towards a brighter, more inclusive future for a better Bangladesh.
