India and Bangladesh must work together

This breakdown in what has long been a relationship built on understanding and respect does not help either nation

Update : 18 Feb 2025, 11:19 AM

It is encouraging to see Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Md Touhid Hossain and Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar having discussions on the sidelines of the 8th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) - bringing hope that the challenges that the two nations currently face in terms of their bilateral relationship can finally be addressed.

India has long been among our closest allies; from playing a major role during our inception as a nation in 1971 to being a key partner in every facet of the economy, there is no denying India’s importance to Bangladesh.

With that said, it has been disappointing to see the challenges facing bilateral relations between the two nations ever since the fall of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government in the wake of the uprisings in July and August of 2024, with many in India propagating misinformation about Bangladesh in the subsequent months instead of offering support to the interim government.

This breakdown in what has long been a relationship built on understanding and respect does not help either nation, and it is good that both the Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor and Indian External Affairs Minister recognize this. For two nations to be so intricately linked and sharing far more than rivers and borders, being cordial and understanding is what is in the best interest of both parties.

To that end, we hope that this conversation sparks the necessary changes that have been needed for Bangladesh and India to put their differences behind them and once again engage meaningfully as neighbours. Both nations have economic ambitions to fulfil, and mutual cooperation and understanding will help ensure that these ambitions become reality.
