As we observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today, it is crucial more than ever before for Bangladesh to reflect on the theme: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
For a nation that has undergone incredible changes this year, and is looking to rebuild a better and more inclusive nation, such a theme should resonate deeply, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive policies.
For too long in our country, we have failed to empower individuals with disabilities to take leadership roles in shaping their own futures which in turn help shape the future of Bangladesh as well. Despite being a significant portion of our population, persons with disabilities continue to face systemic barriers that hinder their full participation in society.
Discrimination, lack of accessibility, and insufficient representation in decision-making processes remain issues that we have much work to do to eliminate. The 2024 theme emphasizes that true inclusivity requires not just acknowledgment but active engagement of persons with disabilities in leadership roles across all sectors.
There is an urgent need to not only identify but dismantle the barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from accessing opportunities. This starts with ensuring that educational institutions are equipped to support diverse learning needs followed by having workplaces that are accessible and accommodating.
It is also important to provide the opportunity to those with disabilities to voice their concerns at a policy level - if we are going to be crafting solutions that genuinely address their unique challenges, we must first be ready to listen to these challenges.
While we have laws aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, implementation remains inconsistent. Only when policies translate into tangible benefits do we truly make progress and pave the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future for all Bangladeshis.
