With the entire world reacting to news about a second Trump presidency, there is understandable concern in Bangladesh about its potential ramifications, especially at a time when we are attempting to rebuild the nation. To that end, the interim government wasting no time in congratulating President Trump once the results were announced is just what we expect in setting the right tone about our continued relationship with the US.
There is also concern about what Trump’s win could mean for the interim government and Bangladesh’s relationship with India, especially in the wake of the misinformation from the Indian media after August 5 regarding the events in Bangladesh in July and August. The onus however is on the advisors in the interim government to not be overly reactive but simultaneously remain on course in their rebuilding efforts. While the relationship between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump is well known, it is vital for our current leaders to ensure that there are no misinformed views such as the ones previously stated by Trump on his social media profile.
Regardless of the presidency in the United States, Bangladesh’s goals have not changed - that of bringing about much needed reforms in key sectors of the country. Efforts should be redoubled to make sure that there are no misinformation or disinformation campaigns that could potentially de-stabilize the country or detract the current interim government from carrying out its goals.
Whether it is Donald Trump or any other global leaders, we hope that they see the facts with regard to Bangladesh and are not swayed by misinformation. Bangladesh too must continue to foster deeper relationships with global powers. We will need all the support if we are to be successful in our rebuild.
