Upholding the rule of law needed for new Bangladesh

There is simply no justification for such actions

Update : 10 Sep 2024, 10:39 AM

We could not agree more with Mahfuz Alam, special assistant to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, underscoring the critical importance of upholding the rule of law and rejecting mob justice during this most critical time for our nation.

Indeed, the recent lynching of a former Chhatra League leader of Rajshahi University is just the latest incident reminding us that mob justice has gone too far and must be brought to a stop. There is simply no justification for such actions.

In the aftermath of the events of July and August, restoring public confidence in the justice system is vital. The interim government, in this pursuit, must take decisive action to prevent the recurrence of mob violence, which has unfortunately become a recurring phenomenon. With mob justice often fueled by frustration and a lack of faith in the formal justice system, the onus is on the interim government to not leave any stone unturned in ensuring the public that rule of law can and will prevail.

In a nation striving for progress and development to create a new and better Bangladesh, acts of mob violence do little more than undermine the very principles of justice and fairness that we want to establish. This commitment to justice will not be easy to establish, but it is the way to not only deter future incidents but also reinforce the belief that the state is capable of protecting all its citizens and that any necessary punishment shall happen according to the rule of law.
