Restoring our forests is a matter of national pride

Reclaiming forestland should ultimately also be a matter of national pride and social justice

Bangladesh speaks of a sustainable future and yet, it is clear to see that we have been woefully unprepared to protect some of our most valuable resources when it comes to building a sustainable future -- namely our forestlands.

Indeed, it is truly shocking to learn just how inept Bangladesh has been with regard to protecting its forest; over the last few years, the government managed to restore only 27,000 hectares of grabbed forest lands, whereas as much as 257,000 hectares of forest lands have gone into the hands of illegal occupants.

To that end, Bangladesh’s second national forest inventory (NFI) exercise could not come at a better time. However, such an exercise will be all for naught if there is no real intent starting immediately to preserve and protect our forestlands.

Make no mistake about it, the importance of reclaiming these lands extends far beyond mere legalities; it is a crucial marker that signals our commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

After all, illegal occupation of forestland often goes hand in hand with other criminal activities and by reclaiming these lands, Bangladesh sends a clear message that it will not tolerate such illicit practices, reinforcing the rule of law and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility.

Reclaiming forestland should ultimately also be a matter of national pride and social justice. Many of those affected by illegal land grabbing are marginalized communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Furthermore, we ought to take pride in our forests as they are a major component of Bangladesh.

Reclaiming forestland is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative. It is a testament to Bangladesh's commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. May we continue to develop as an economy, but simultaneously, develop to embrace our forestlands and recognize their importance.
