Taking out the trash

Lack of a comprehensive waste management infrastructure has resulted in our waters becoming a dangerous breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant “super-bugs”

For all the development that Bangladesh has experienced in the past few decades, we continue to grapple with problems as rudimentary as waste management. A good example of our waste management problems making a big adverse impact can be seen in the current state of the River Buriganga, the once mighty river that is now among the most polluted in the entire nation.

To that end, the Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Saber Hossain Chowdhury’s recent plea to all in maintaining a clean and waste-free nation cannot could not have come at a better time.

The lack of a comprehensive waste management infrastructure has resulted in our waters becoming a dangerous breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant “super-bugs” which portend devastating consequences for our already over-burdened healthcare system, the potential spread of which has been traced back to untreated sewage by researchers.

Speaking of our healthcare system, medical waste also continues to be a major driver in this case -- due to a variety of factors including a lack of awareness, misguided prioritization, a lack of concern for the environment, and a lack of infrastructure and technology, medical waste is growing by the hundreds of tons on a daily basis in the capital city alone.

The recently announced partnership between Eastern Bank PLC and icddr,b for the establishment of a state-of-the-art solid bio-hazardous waste treatment facility holds some genuine promise.

We cannot wait on this issue anymore.

Meaningful policies to reinforce our waste management infrastructure is what we need at this juncture. Yes, the public has a large part to play in keeping the nation clean, but we need the infrastructure in place to deter people from littering while also holding industrial polluters accountable for their actions.
