Smart Bangladesh needs smart agriculture

The modernization of Bangladesh's agriculture is at this stage no longer a mere option but a necessity

Update : 12 Jan 2024, 11:08 PM

There is no questioning agriculture’s role when it comes to our country; despite our aspirations as a digital nation, agriculture remains the backbone of our economy, the biggest employer, and our most crucial sector.

It is thus imperative that Bangladesh evolves its agricultural practices to meet the challenges that come with it, and is ready for a world and nation that is facing a changing climate, increasing population, and overall food demand. Traditional farming methods, reliance on age-old crop varieties, and inadequate use of technology have held back the sector's potential for growth, and it is about time this changes.

The impact of climate change on agricultural productivity must not be overlooked; rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events pose formidable challenges to traditional farming. Bangladesh is also one of the most vulnerable countries to the adverse effects of climate change.

Therefore, embracing precision farming technologies and incorporating better data analytics can empower this sector with real-time information and help optimize our resource usage, hopefully leading to better mitigation of the effects of climate variability. Moreover, drought-resistant and pest-resistant varieties can significantly enhance yields, ensuring food security in the face of the uncertainties that we already see in the world.

The government must play a pivotal role in fostering an environment conducive to the adoption of modern agricultural practices. Investment in research and development, farmer education programs, and incentives for technology adoption are essential components of this transformative journey.

The modernization of Bangladesh's agriculture is at this stage no longer a mere option but a necessity. The time for change is now, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, from policymakers to farmers, to ensure this happens for the betterment of Bangladesh's agricultural landscape and our overall ambitions of being a prosperous nation.
