The never-ending scourge of rape must come to an end

The government, civil society, and citizens must work collaboratively in implementing a holistic strategy

Update : 02 Jan 2024, 03:04 PM

The fact that, as per a recent report conducted by Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), 573 women were raped in 2023, with 33 of them murdered afterwards, paints the grimmest of pictures, especially when taken into consideration that these are reported numbers, and the vast majority of such cases are swept under the rug.

To say that this is a grave societal issue that demands immediate attention would be an understatement. The grim reality is that our nation is failing to curb this heinous crime, and it is high time we acknowledge the urgency of the situation and take decisive action.

The rise in rape cases can only be recognized as a deeper societal problem rooted in gender-based violence, cultural norms, and above all, a retrograde and flawed judicial system. While these issues have consistently been highlighted by this newspaper and many others, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to address the root causes of rape, it appears that as far as results, we have some way to go.

First and foremost, there is an urgent need for a cultural shift that challenges traditional gender norms and promotes equality. It is high time our society breaks free from the shackles of patriarchal attitudes that perpetuate a culture of silence and victim-blaming.

Secondly, the legal system must be strengthened to ensure swift and effective justice for survivors of rape. The lengthy delays in court proceedings and the low conviction rates have resulted in establishing a sense of impunity among perpetrators.

The government, civil society, and citizens must work collaboratively in implementing a holistic strategy that addresses the root causes, strengthens the legal framework, and supports survivors. It is time to prioritize the safety and well-being of all our citizens and ensure that Bangladesh becomes a place where every individual can live without the fear of sexual violence.
