A shake of hands with the US

There is still much more to be done, and there are a number of things that we can handle better

Update : 25 Sep 2023, 09:23 AM

Trade between Bangladesh and the US has been increasing dramatically over the last decade, that much is certain. Recently, bilateral trade between our two nations was valued at $14 billion, with Bangladeshi exports mainly consisting of clothing while US exports consisted of products such as steel and agricultural goods.

This is most definitely an impressive figure, and the administration would do well to ensure that this trade partnership only blossoms in the future, and that the strong partnership between the two countries will only get stronger.

Bangladesh and the US have had strong bilateral ties for decades. In recent years, this has only increased due to Bangladesh’s strategic position in South Asia. While there have been recent developments that have rocked our relationship, both sides need to realize that this partnership can only work when both sides cooperate with the betterment of the other in mind.

Forging and maintaining strong bilateral ties has been one aspect of the government that has most definitely seen an uptick in the past few years, as indicated by our track record with the US – after years of foreign diplomacy failures, it is good to see some genuine improvements.

Of course, there is still much more to be done, and there are a number of things that we can handle better. Nevertheless, the administration has proven itself when it comes to living up to our founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dictum of being friends to all and holding malice towards none.

Bangladesh will face a number of challenges in the coming years, but with a little help from our friends, we can not only get by, but prosper.
