Domestic workers have the same basic rights as anyone else.
The Dhaka court which handed down a life sentence to Nourin Jahan Nodi for abusing a child working in her home should be applauded for recognising that.
Aduri, 11 years old at the time of the incident, was tortured and left for dead in a dustbin, and while nothing will heal the scars of her unspeakable ordeal, this verdict will send a powerful message to all abusers and would-be abusers out there.
It is a cause for hope for domestic workers everywhere, that their cases will not be ignored by the justice system, as they have been so often in the past.
