Navigating the turbulent waters of river erosion

Update : 05 Jul 2023, 09:18 AM

It is a matter of sadness that river erosion continues to cause the damage it does on a yearly basis -- with little to no solution in sight. Just over the past two weeks, Teesta River gobbled up 50 homes while it destroyed a vast area of cropland and a government primary school in Ulipur upazila in Kurigram.

River erosion has long plagued Bangladesh, inflicting substantial economic and social costs on the people, leaving behind a trail of devastation that demands urgent attention. The economic repercussions of river erosion are undeniable, demanding immediate action and long-term strategies to mitigate its impact.

Beyond the homes, the economic effects of river erosion are felt most in agriculture -- the backbone of Bangladesh's economy. Fertile lands, essential for crop cultivation, are swallowed by the advancing waters, resulting in a significant loss of agricultural productivity.

Bangladesh has long needed a comprehensive approach to tackle river erosion; investing in effective early warning systems that can provide timely alerts to vulnerable communities is the need of the hour.

Furthermore, bolstering the infrastructure of river embankments and flood protection systems can help shield populated areas and arable lands from erosion. The implementation of sustainable land management practices and reforestation initiatives along riverbanks must also be prioritized.

Tree plantation programs can stabilize the riverbanks, reducing erosion and offering protection to adjacent areas. Additionally, constructing multipurpose reservoirs and implementing river dredging projects can control water flow, minimizing the impact of erosion on settlements and agricultural lands.

While tackling river erosion is undoubtedly challenging, it is not insurmountable. The issue demands immediate action, not only to protect the livelihoods of millions but also to safeguard the economic stability of the nation.

With pro-active measures and comprehensive planning, Bangladesh can navigate the turbulent waters of river erosion and emerge stronger, resilient, and better prepared to face future challenges.
