A long-standing concern to our road safety has been the unfit nature of too many vehicles on the road, which, despite being a massive risk, are yet to be prohibited.
Bangladesh is no stranger to road accidents, and that is a matter of great shame. While numerous factors contribute to the rising number of accidents, unfit vehicles seem to be a common factor in these cases.
According to reports, the number of vehicles seeking fitness clearance is at an all time low in the country, despite there being a rising number of new vehicles registered -- which certainly is cause for alarm, as the eligibility of cars on our roads is yet to be determined.
To that end, it is imperative that strict measures are taken to ban the use of such vehicles. Not only do they frequently cause casualties, but are also responsible for harmful emissions that add to the already hazardous pollution levels.
In fact, stern regulations on unlicensed vehicles -- and drivers -- must also be established, so as to ensure the general public's safety on the roads.
Especially with the Eid holidays fast approaching, we stand an even higher risk of road accidents. The road safety authorities must take immediate steps to ensure that the root of such mishaps is taken out -- not just for this season, but for the foreseeable future.
As we move closer and closer to our development goals, we must not compromise with the safety of the very people helping us progress. Immediate measures must be taken to ensure that public safety on the roads is not jeopardized in any way.
