Friendship for everyone

Bangladesh has also managed to establish new relationships with countries it was on neutral terms with earlier

Update : 09 Apr 2023, 01:14 AM

When it comes to the establishment, progression, and maintenance of international relationships, our recent track record, particularly in recent years, has been nothing but stellar.

Indeed, it goes back once again to Bangabandhy Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's words echoed nearly 50 years ago, of “friendship to all and malice towards none.”

Bangladesh has not only managed to strengthen long lasting partnerships -- like the recent discussions we have had with our partner states in Europe -- Bangladesh has also managed to establish new relationships with countries it was on neutral terms with earlier.

However, with the world becoming increasingly interconnected, different spheres of influence are springing up with their partiality towards specific goals and philosophies.

In a time like this, Bangladesh has to maintain the golden rule of diplomacy which states that the best possible outcome in this scenario is maintaining friendly relationships with everyone without tilting towards one sphere of influence or the next.

A good demonstration of this prospect has been seen throughout the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Bangladesh is on friendly ties with both Russia and the US, but in a situation like this, Bangladesh has had to play a delicate game, which it continues to do so.

There is also pressure around Bangladesh due to its strategic location and increasing tensions between China and the US. As such, in incidents like this, we need to play our cards right.

Again, kudos to the diplomatic wing for their effort in general over the last few years. However, we still need to maintain the golden rule. Bangladesh is looking to progress to greater heights as an economy, and as such, it is for its own best interests to continue to abide by the words of Bangabandhu.
