Our healthcare needs a check-up

There still remain a plethora of issues in our healthcare system

Update : 19 Feb 2023, 12:55 AM

The healthcare sector is irrefutably one of the key indicators of a nation's progress. A healthy nation fuels itself forward, and standard healthcare services are imperative to the process.

Bangladesh has demonstrated exceptional prowess in the field in recent years, especially in its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent vaccination initiatives.

To that end, it is good to know that our government is dedicated towards improving the industry further, and aims to bring up our health sector to global standards. The Health and Family Welfare Minister recently shared these ambitions, citing plans to make Bangladesh a globally trusted treatment destination.

These are certainly good ambitions to have, and could aid us in achieving our long-term development goals.

However, it is also important for a country at a stage like ours to have more practical goals that address the existing flaws in the system.

Despite the commendable containment of Covid-19, there still remain a plethora of issues in our healthcare system -- ranging from malpractice to negligence.

Unless these concerns, which plague the general public on almost a daily basis, are addressed, we cannot expect to have a decent system in place -- much less one that can be considered of international standards.

The relevant authorities must first work towards ensuring that our healthcare services cater to the entirety of our population, regardless of socio-economic background. Only once that is guaranteed can we proceed to reach a global standard.
