There is no doubting the growth trajectory Bangladesh is on. Even with the challenges of a global pandemic, we remain firmly on the right path, and the 2020s should see us reach greater heights and achieve significant milestones.
This impressive growth, which has been complemented by massive investment in public megaprojects such as the metro rail and our power plants and which has been possible also with the rapid technological advancements of the 21st century, also brings numerous challenges and issues.
Perhaps no threat is more significant in our immediate future than the threat of cybercrimes; over the years, we have seen Bangladesh display vulnerability in this sphere, and with the future trending more towards cyberspace in every facet of life, it is imperative that we double down and fortify our cyber security measures as we are only going to get more and more vulnerable.
Indeed, it is not out of the norm to suggest that most defense training and education that continues to be taught in Bangladesh has not been updated to meet the evolving challenges of the 21st century, and conflict and warfare today look very different to what it did even 30 years ago.
To that end, ensuring we have the appropriate protective measures in place, together with training our defense personnel to keep up with the needs of the 21st century is the need of the hour.
We continue to hear the authorities concerned speak about becoming a Smart Bangladesh in less than two decades, but in order to do that, it must also have “smart” security which will protect itself and its citizens from new and emerging threats.
