Actions speak louder than awards

Developed nations must pay up for what is, essentially, their mess

Update : 15 Nov 2022, 01:42 AM

Congratulations are in order for Bangladesh, as one of the four countries awarded for their locally-led adaptation measures at COP27. Bangladesh has demonstrated exemplary conviction in its battle against the climate crisis, and it is encouraging to see that these efforts are being recognized.

The Rangamati Hill District Council initiative was awarded for their community-driven attempt to counter the increasingly threatening effects of droughts, landslides, and flash floods using solar powered water supply and safe drinking water provisions.

Indeed, this is a worthy example of local communities coming together to design counter-measures for the deadly impacts of a climate crisis that they had little to do with in the first place.

While being recognized for such commendable initiatives is certainly encouraging, especially at an international conference of such great importance, we must remember that mere accolades cannot protect a developing country such as ours from the global climate crisis.

One of the main agendas for Bangladesh at this year's COP has been to demand the green climate funds we were promised, which could be of substantial help to our country in repairing the damage that climate change continues to cause -- a promise that we are yet to see any real results of.

The present scenario begs reiterating: Developed nations must pay up for what is, essentially, their mess. Awards and recognition are certainly reassuring, but cannot be a way for those at fault to wipe their hands of their responsibilities.

What we truly need is immediate action to back us up -- to not only survive the harrowing effects of climate change, but to try and reverse the damage altogether.

With the appropriate funds and support from international powers fighting for the same cause, paired with the dedicated efforts of the vulnerable local communities, perhaps we can stand a chance against the climate crisis.
