The tourism sector in Bangladesh is, unfortunately, yet to realize its full potential -- which is a shame, as the country has all of the makings of an eminent tourist destination.
While the pandemic caused tourism sectors worldwide to take a hit, our tourism industry in particular is seemingly still struggling to recover from the shock.
This is, in large part, owing to the already substandard pre-pandemic state of the industry -- which has left the authorities with a lot more work to do to bring the sector up to code.
Bangladesh is home to a rich mix of culture, history, and natural beauty, making it an excellent spot for tourists from all over the world to enjoy. However, a lack of proper security and services to match the quality of all we have to offer, amongst other external factors, have led to the crippling of what could have been an extremely profitable industry.
It is encouraging, however, that the government acknowledges the promise our nation holds, and is determined to take necessary initiatives to develop the sector.
The Bangladesh Tourism Board has been devising a recovery plan for the industry to take it to newer heights. In line with their timeline, numerous programs will be implemented to improve on various aspects of the tourism sector that need special attention.
This is certainly the right move. A number of our promising industries have been neglected for far too long, and the tourism industry could certainly use a face-lift right about now.
In order for these plans to work, however, the authorities will need to really zero in on the flaws in our system -- such as the high tax rates on accommodation services, the lack of security for visitors, and the general upkeep of tourist spots -- and find permanent fixes to make the country an ideal tourist spot.
We have a lot to offer as a nation, and it is high time we polish the edges to let our country stand out to the rest of the world.
