As Dhaka continues to be the hub for economic affairs of the country, the population of the capital has far surpassed its capacity. This has, invariably, led to a number of daily struggles for the citizens, affecting the rate at which we develop.
Heavy traffic, poor air quality, and an overall mismanagement on the relevant authorities' part have made the city uninhabitable for all.
Under these circumstances, the DNCC Mayor's commitment to the radical improvement to current living conditions is a beacon of hope for city-dwellers. Mayor Atiqul Islam recently discussed promising plans and projections for developments to the city landscape.
The authorities have established a good number of parks across the city, with over a dozen more underway. In addition, various green and recreational spaces are also being developed, along with a more sound traffic management system.
The fact that ambitious and necessary initiatives as such are being taken is extremely encouraging. The residents of Dhaka have suffered a great deal while collectively contributing to the advancement of the nation -- the results of which have been evident over the last decade.
It is about time the city resembles the economic achievements we have worked towards so devotedly.
While the city corporations join hands in the design and prompt implementation of current plans, we must not stop there. Thorough and long-term planning is imperative to create a sustainable environment for the people to thrive in.
More forward-thinking initiatives, as the ones in motion, can bring about the kind of complete and permanent reform that the city is in need of.
Let's continue to be steadfast in our efforts to build a liveable city that the people deserve.
