In the last seven years, employment in this sector has gone up by 400,000 people, which speaks volumes about the current state of its viability. This is no doubt a result of the capacities of our country’s medium and large industries gradually increasing. For a country that is looking into expanding and diversifying its export basket, this is certainly a step in the right direction.
Bangladesh has long since relied on its RMG sector for a bulk of its GDP. While we must continue to strive to further improve our position in that sector, we must also keep an eye on the other industries as well. Keeping all our eggs in one basket is a handicap for the economy -- as was seen during the Covid-19 pandemic -- and not taking the care to grow our economy holistically also means that there are less opportunities available for us, which contributes to the plague of brain drain.
Bangladesh has been producing world class graduates for a while now, but we have been failing in giving them the opportunities to show their worth. Thankfully, with our medium and large industries steadily on the rise -- a lot of which will need professionals who have particular skills and talents -- this is a problem now we have the opportunity to solve.
We need to keep on this trend. We have several milestones to hit, and now is the perfect time to build industries in keeping with the ideas of the fourth industrial revolution. The world is changing, and we have the perfect opportunity to adapt. Let’s take full advantage.
