Getting fleeced on oil purchase

Update : 24 May 2013, 04:37 AM

As a nation we are often faced with poor public sector management that is hugely detrimental to the general public. The recent report on BPC and the staggering losses that the country has experienced due to poor procurement practices and allegations of widespread corruption, is more of the same.

State level negotiations may seem strong on paper and may offer some advantages, but ultimately the price paid is far too high. As a nation that is on the verge of an economic "take-off," we need to make sure that we are cutting unnecessary losses and streamlining all of our public sector practices.

The fact that we had a more efficient system in place, and that we chose to scrap that system in favour of one that causes systemic losses and promotes rampant corruption is absolutely unacceptable.

Any allegations against BPC officials must be investigated thoroughly. {As a nation, we must ensure that those who allegedly filled their personal coffers at the expense of the national exchequer are meted out the justice that they deserve}.

The fact that officials from BPC are making excuses and tossing around mediocre explanations does not provide us with any measure of confidence that they can, or want to, reform the procurement policies of this important agency.

The government would do well to put a stop to all of this immediately. The people of the nation must be reassured that we will not continue to suffer from unnecessary, crippling losses and that the procurement processes and negotiations from here on in are carried out fairly and transparently.
