Keeping the nation fed

Existing databases have to be updated and the authorities have to plan long term

Update : 20 Mar 2022, 08:24 PM

For Bangladesh, programs where the poor and the marginalized people are provided some sort of assistance in the form of food and other subsidiary materials are vital, and play a major role in alleviating some of their distress.

On that note, it is severely disappointing that the much important school feeding program -- a program through which the low-income families of the country are able to acquire nutritious food for their children -- has been in a standstill since January.

The program has been operational for a long time now, and teachers have credited the program with keeping attendance high in primary schools. For families of insufficient income, sending children to school is a luxury in and of itself.

But the school feeding program had not only provided them with an incentive for sending their children to school, it provided a large number of children with the nutrition they need to become healthy adults. After all, for a lot of families, this is the only source of nutrition for their children.

However, it is unacceptable that the principal reason for the halt in this program is as a result of bureaucracy and paperwork.

The fact that a program of this magnitude such as this is halted due to paperwork delays and other red tapes is a testament to the deep structural issues of the governance system of the country. Not only that, but the families of these children contribute to the overall economy as well. A standstill like this is not only unfair, but it also means letting a huge portion of the country down, where a significant portion of our future nation-builders are not receiving the sustenance they require on a day-to-day basis.

This needs to be fixed immediately. Existing databases have to be updated and the authorities have to plan long term so that disruptions like this don’t happen again. Depriving our children from valuable nutrients and resources is no different to depriving the whole nation's progress.
