Whether it is the significant contributions to bilateral development projects or the long diplomatic ties between the two countries, Germany continues to be a very important international partner state for Bangladesh. On the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Germany, it is appropriate to rejoice this partnership.
It is also exciting to see that Germany, on this occasion, correctly described Bangladesh as an “important economic and political partner for Germany.” The official statement from the German foreign ministry has also praised Bangladesh for its achievement in poverty reduction, which has halved since 2000.
The emphasis in the official statement on the responsibility -- of both countries -- to ensure compliance with fundamental social and environmental standards in readymade garments production is an important point and Bangladesh must prioritize this equally.
To that end, Bangladesh should work more closely with Germany, which is the second-largest importer of textile products from Bangladesh.
Germany has always put great importance on managing the consequences of climate change and achieving sustainable economic growth and stability in the region, which aligns perfectly with Bangladesh’s own priorities relating to climate change goals.
Both countries should invest heavily in innovative adaptation measures in Bangladesh, given particularly that a significant portion of the country is no more than one meter above sea level, and around 25 million people live in the coastal regions.
It is very encouraging to see that adaptation has been mentioned with due importance by Germany in the official statement commemorating the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations.
Bangladesh should utilize its diplomatic connection with Germany to push for mitigation goals. The country should also try to leverage the bilateral relation to push for climate change funds pledged by the developed countries.
