The government’s decision to set up specialized cancer hospitals in the eight divisional cities is timely and commendable.
It’s no big secret that our healthcare industry has always been in a state of crisis, not just in terms of facilities but overall quality as well. To finally set up specialized centres for cancer treatment is absolutely a step in the right direction.
Our medical colleges are known throughout the sub-continent, which has even led to foreign dignitaries studying at these esteemed institutions. And while our healthcare sector’s performance has varied from being adequate to exceptional in certain circumstances -- most notably in the tackling of the Covid-19 crisis – there is still a long way to go.
When it comes to the treatment of life-threatening conditions like cancer, there are still things that we need to do. To that end, it is welcome news indeed that specialized cancer hospitals will be set up not only in Dhaka but throughout the eight regions of Bangladesh.
The government has done well in initiating this plan, and they would do even better if they ride on the coattails of its potential success and initiate a comprehensive plan to plug in all the gaps in our healthcare apparatus.
Let this be a turning point for our healthcare industry.
