A pro-active move

Imports can be subsidized so that they stock in goods before Ramadan

Update : 13 Feb 2022, 11:34 AM

It is good to see that the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has already chalked up a plan to deal with the inevitable rise in demand for essentials that lead to market instability during Ramadan, which is coming in April of this year.

At present, TCB sells essentials from 22 spots across the country for five days a week. But during Ramadan, the corporation plans to sell commodities six days a week for 38 days between March and April.

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting, and, as such, the demand for essential items like oil and sugar increases. The market always fails to meet this demand, which results in a spike in the prices of these essential products.

Due to the impact that Covid-19 has had in the past two years on our economy, and consequently the livelihoods of a large swathe of our population, it has become more important than ever to keep the prices of products in check.

And while TCB has a good stock of goods, and plans to sell them to as many people as they can, in order for a solution to be truly inclusive, the government has no choice but to step in and regulate the market.

The administration needs to talk with the relevant stakeholders and do everything they can to make sure that we are well-stocked for the season of Ramadan. If need be, imports can be subsidized so that they stock in goods before Ramadan.

Whatever happens, it needs to be ensured that the market is fair and inclusive for all people. Considering that we are still not out of the woods when it comes to the pandemic; when it comes to the matters of economy, our leaders needs to be more pro-active.
