Defying death

Update : 28 Apr 2013, 07:57 AM

The photograph on the front page of the Dhaka Tribune, published yesterday, says it all about the power of the human spirit and the determination to survive in the face of death. It is the most amazing thing to behold. Just take a look at the fire in this man’s eyes and the defiant, triumphant gesture of his hands.

This man was brought out alive from within the rubble of Rana Plaza, two days after its collapse, but he remained unconquerable through it all. His is a picture of human triumph, and gives hope to the rescuers and families that the ones who remain trapped are still fighting as he has, and will come out alive.

Thus far, at least 2,400 people have been rescued from the rubble, with more trapped within. We owe it to them and to their families, still waiting, hoping and praying, to continue with rescue efforts until all are accounted for, or there is no possibility left of survival.

This man too, was underground for several days, but the spark of life in him did not die. He did not let it die. He had loved ones to live for and refused to give up. But there are many others like him, and as long as there is still hope of getting them out, no stop should be put to the rescue efforts.

If anyone has any doubt as to whether the rescue efforts have been fruitful, and ought to be continued, just look at this man. Look into his eyes. That should say it all.
