ED: Let’s not underestimate the Delta variant

Rules and regulations are constantly flouted, and experts are routinely ignored

Update : 11 Jun 2021, 07:38 AM

When it comes to Covid-19 and the various strains which have caused concern and chaos across the world, it is imperative that we do everything in our power to ensure that we are equipped to not only deal with the crisis as we know it, but also with the way it might manifest in the future.

Unfortunately, as the highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19 makes its way through border districts as well as the capital and other parts of the nation, a lack of discipline in combination with administrative incompetence and a half-hearted lockdown has put us in a situation vulnerable to both the disease and the economic fallout that almost inevitably results from it.

Preparation and prevention have to remain the priority for public institutions at every level and in every sector -- we simply do not have the resources to manage and treat such a vast population of infected, especially as we continue to negotiate and broker deals for vaccinations from various sources. And we are seeing this right now, as hospitals in the frontier districts are overrun with patients they do not have the equipment, staff, or budget necessary to treat effectively.

Such lacklustre attitudes leading to equally lacklustre implementation of health directives and preventative measures is an unacceptable aspect of any local or national public administrative body, and must be dealt with the utmost urgency and seriousness.

Rules and regulations are constantly flouted, and experts are routinely ignored. This cannot be how we move forward with these new threats we face. Our law enforcement agencies and government bodies must get their act together if we are to have any chance of battling the pandemic and saving the people from further suffering.
