ED: Getting a clear picture

Antibody tests will go a long way towards ensuring that we have the information necessary

Update : 07 Feb 2021, 07:34 PM

It has been almost a year since the coronavirus made its way into the Bangladeshi population and, since then, while there were mistakes made along the way, the government has done a commendable job of ensuring that the most vulnerable segments of the population are provided for and that the economy finds its footing again.

In more positive news, the daily test-positivity rate and death rate have also seen significant decrease, with the nation witnessing single-digit test positivity for the last six weeks or so.

Still, that should not distract us from the fact that more than 8,000 people have lost their lives to the virus and that vaccinating the entire population will take time, and is dependent on the basic logistics of distributing it amongst a population so massive in size, and the procurement of more vaccines.

What remains key moving forward is getting a clear picture of the situation as it is right now, and the only way that can be done is through carrying out a comprehensive antibody test survey, one that will allow us to create future public policy to ensure that that the prevalence of coronavirus amongst the population is eradicated.

In order to understand which parts of the population have been affected the most and which areas require attention, it is important to be informed -- especially so considering the fact that Covid-19 is oftentimes spread through asymptomatic individuals.

Antibody tests which cover a true representative sample of the population will go a long way towards making sure that we have the information necessary to ensure that 2021 is the year we get rid of the coronavirus, once and for all.
