ED: Hope on the horizon

A vaccine appears some distance away, but there has been much progress

Update : 27 Jun 2020, 07:41 PM

With almost six months having passed since the first case of Covid-19 registered in Wuhan, China, the world is a very different place than it was before 2020 began, with the virus sweeping across the planet mercilessly, leaving both lives and livelihoods in every part of the world in tatters.

However, it is encouraging to learn that doctors do feel more prepared now to better solve the problems that Covid-19 brings, which will no doubt result in many more lives saved.

In the midst of all the destruction brought about by the pandemic, health workers have been the ones who have been at the forefront, risking their lives to treat wave after wave of patients, while disease experts and doctors are no doubt leaving no stone unturned to learn how to best combat this deadly virus.

It is also unquestionable that, six months in, the world knows more about this virus now. There is less hysteria, more focus and clarity of thought, and a better understanding of the resources and personnel required to fight it.

Moreover, this sense of urgency is unprecedented in history; the sheer wealth of scientific data and knowledge that has been produced on Covid-19 in such a short period of time, together with all the trials and errors of different medicines, the adjustments, and readjustments on the fly that hospitals have had to do with regards to space and struc-turing, making testing more widespread and efficient -- all of these factors once again highlight the indomitable spirit of human beings.

This is the new hope for the world. A vaccine appears some distance away, but there has been much progress. Along with new treatments and solutions that are coming through, there is a reason for hope that the worst has been left behind.
