ED: Saving the lives of those who save us

Close to 4,000 health workers have been infected so far

Update : 21 Jun 2020, 08:12 PM

Bangladesh is now ranked 17th in the world in terms of total number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with at least 108,000 infected and almost 1,500 dead, leading to an unprecedented crisis that we must do everything in our power to mitigate.

But what is even more worrisome is the fact that, among the ones who have lost their lives to Covid-19 in our country, at least 50 were doctors according to the Bangladesh Medical Association, leading to Bangladesh having the highest mortality rate for doctors in the world.

This presents us with an undeniably tragic and terrifying situation in the country, where the ones who are putting their lives at risk on a daily basis to save our lives are not receiving the protection necessary to do their jobs safely.

The fact that, by one estimate, close to 4,000 health care workers have been infected so far – an infection rate that is much higher compared to other countries – is a testament to how we have failed, time and again, to act as was necessary.

Our health sector has been put under tremendous stress in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, with health care professionals working long hours and going beyond the call of duty, but, unfortunately, the authorities responsible for providing them with high quality PPE and training did not do so.

In addition, the utter lack of proper management and resources has paved the way for confusion and chaos, exacerbating an already worsening situation.

As this year’s budget has shown us, we have not treated this pandemic with the seriousness and fortitude that we should have, and that needs to change.

We must understand that, in the coming months, the health sector and its continuous improvement must be the number one priority. It is the only way to ensure that, in the long run, the people are safe, and so are the health care workers who serve them.
