Bangladesh has eased its lockdown restrictions, and besides educational institutions, all other sections of the economy, such as offices, businesses, transportation, and institutions, are slowly but surely opening up.
While people at large are rightfully wondering about the justification for opening up the economy -- Bangladesh had a record-breaking 40 deaths and over 2,500 new cases in one day -- we must also accept the reality of the situation.
The authorities have also placed forward numerous health and safety directives, and if these were absolutely vital during the lockdown period, then their importance increases even more so now that we are witnessing the reopening of the economy.
This means that everyone must adhere to these directives, and the many restrictions that naturally come with these directives must be followed diligently, without excuse.
It must be remembered that our health care facilities are already on the verge of being overwhelmed, and with dengue season upon us as well, we could be looking at an absolute health catastrophe over the months of June and July if there were to be a sharp increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 infected patients. We can, however, also prevent this from happening.
In order to do that, we must be more cautious than we ever have been during this pandemic. There is no other option.
