At long last, Captain Abdul Majed, one of the key people involved in the assassination of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been arrested and sent to jail.
Nearly 11 years ago, Majed was handed the death sentence by the Supreme Court along with 11 others, but it was not possible to apprehend him at the time.
Now, in Mujib Year, this much-needed arrest has been made, and although it is quite late, the timing is strangely appropriate.
After reportedly hiding in Kolkata for some 23 years, Abdul Majed had returned to Dhaka this month, resulting in his arrest.
One of the most tragic days in this nation’s history was August 15, 1975, when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family, were killed in a coup d’etat. 12 individuals were given death sentences, although not all of them could be found at the time, Majed being one of them.
Now that Abdul Majed has been sent to jail, another leaf can be turned in this long road to justice.
This process, however, is not yet over, as five killers still remain at large, including Col (dismissed) Khandakar Abdur Rahid, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Noor Chowdhury, Maj (retd) Rashed Chowdhury, and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan.
We hope the killers still residing abroad are brought back to Bangladesh to face punishment for their crimes. Only when all of Bangabandhu’s assassins are brought to book can the nation be satisfied that justice has been finally delivered.
