For the health of our children

Bangladesh’s patients, in particular the children, needlessly suffer due to inadequate medical facilities

Update : 19 Feb 2020, 12:00 AM

It is reassuring to see that, when it comes to ensuring better health for the future generations of our country, the authorities are indeed seeking some solutions.

This week’s approval of a draft to merge Dhaka Children Hospital and Bangladesh Institute of Child Health by the cabinet should prove to be beneficial for providing better health care services to our children.

In the past, this newspaper has editorialized on the often woeful conditions of our health care services, particularly when it comes to providing appropriate health care for our children.

To that end, while this is an encouraging first step, what is important moving forward is that this merger of these two institutions go through smoothly, and that the administration ensure its smooth operation.

Additionally, we must also continue to invest in our health sector, which means having state of the art medical facilities at our medical institutions and giving our doctors and health practitioners the right kind of training to care for the patients.

Already, Bangladesh’s patients, in particular the children, needlessly suffer due to inadequate medical facilities and it is about time this changes.

Children are the future of any nation; for a country such as Bangladesh which harbours such lofty economic ambitions, it is of particular importance that we do all we can to make sure that our children grow up healthy.

Only when our children grow up healthy can they take our nation forward and help realize our vision for the country.
