It is encouraging to hear Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina commit to a justice system that remains true to the democratic values on which our great nation was founded, asking for equal punishment of criminals regardless of their political affiliations.
This could not come at a more crucial time, with the recent killing of Abrar Fahad being a stark example of how most people in the country believe that party affiliation can hand criminals impunity when it comes to breaking the law.
In fact, nepotism and corruption are at the root of much of what has tainted the democratic nature of how our country is meant to function, with many amongst us believing that they are above the law as a result of their connections to the right individuals.
This allows for a nation to effectively to create various different classes of people, each with special rights and privileges which the most are not privy to.
As such, we appreciate the PM’s words in reiterating that a democratic nation cannot allow such differences to exist within our society, and each individual must be treated equal in the eyes of the law and the government, and any discrepancy in this regard cannot be allowed to persist.
Power cannot be used to escape the letter of the law and we hope that, moving forward, law enforcement agencies heed the prime minister’s issuance in this regard.
If there’s any power to be had in our nation, it should be in the hands of the people.
