Congratulations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for being recognized in Time Magazine’s prestigious list of the most influential people in the world this year.
This past year has been a particularly trying one for the government of Bangladesh, as it has been faced with hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees at the border -- trying to flee death, persecution, and abuse.
While much of the world community sadly stayed silent on the matter, PM Hasina did the right thing, and made the decision of providing the Rohingya with refuge.
The Rohingya crisis was, and remains, a humanitarian challenge of the most complex kind, but Bangladesh, under PM Hasina’s leadership, showed that this is not something we can turn our backs on.
To that end, the PM has personally visited the refugee camps, and has shown kindness and generosity towards the many stateless and unwanted Rohingya who have nowhere else to go.
From setting us on the path towards economic development and prosperity, to fighting militancy and extremism, the PM has shown the world how far Bangladesh has come, and how far it can go. Her inclusion in Time Magazine’s list is indicative of the fact that Bangladesh is being considered as a truly important player in the global arena -- the world is looking at us, and what we do matters.
Some of our toughest challenges remain ahead of us, and we are confident the PM will use her influence for good, and help us meet our humanitarian and development aspirations in the years to come.
