Voiceless Bangladeshi speaks in art

Update : 23 Mar 2017, 03:27 PM
The initative 'Voiceless Bangladeshi' embodies that understanding, as is apparent from the name, and seeks to redress it. Last week, Voiceless Bangladeshi organised an art camp titled “A Bangladesh of my Dreams” on the occasion of National Children’s Day. At Alokito Hridoy Primary School in Tangail, 150 students from the school and nearby areas came together to “express their imagination through art.” The event on March 17 was only a series of projects undertaken by Voiceless Bangladeshi.Courtesy Courtesy Founded by Naima Alam, Lecturer at Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), the initiative was started to accompany a course Naima teaches. “I teach a course called Introduction to Public Relations and I am a big believer in practice-based learning. So I came up with this class project to help students gain an idea of how to apply their theories and models on a social advocacy project,” Naima said. The students learn until their mid-terms and then they work on applications through various means. One of these is running the Voiceless Bangladeshi Facebook page and coming up with different social media content. The other, and more exciting part of their activities, is street art. “We have covered various issues like child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, gender inequality, family structures, education for the poor, etc,” said Naima.Courtesy Courtesy The street art, occupying walls mainly in Dhaka's Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas, tackle tough topics. The depictions are often brazen, aiming to deliver clear messages. To date, the project has completed more than 70 street art projects. The art camp on March 17 was meant to help mold future artists and advocates of Bangladesh from an early age. It ended with a prize giving ceremony, where Naima Alam proposed future art camps and workshops with Alokito Hridoy Foundation. To learn more about their street art, visit https://www.facebook.com/voicelessbangladeshi/
