Update : 23 Jan 2014, 06:09 PM

Theatre troupe Drishyapat is set to make the 100th staging of its acclaimed production Socrates-er Jobanbondi at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy tomorrow. Marking the occasion, the troupe has arranged a three-day festival which began yesterday.

The 99th staging will be held today at the same venue. Prachyanat presented its celebrated play Gondar on the opening day.

Based on Plato’s Defense of Socrates, Socrates-er Jobanbondi has been adapted by Shishirkumar Das and directed by Ali Mahmud.

The play is set on the trial in which three members of the Greek elite class – Anytus, Melenus and Policrates – falsely accuse the great philosopher, Socrates for misleading the younger generation through his philosophy.

After a mockery of trial, Socrates was forced to commit suicide by drinking hemlock. Plato, a direct disciple of Socrates, witnesses the trial and indexes the proceedings.

Through the conflict between an individual and state, Socrates-er Jobanbondi, depicts the misuse of democracy.
