Baul Festival ends with hope

A two-day Baul Festival and seminar, organised by Baul Tori – a folk cultural organisation, ended at the music and dance auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on November 6.

The two-day festival began at 4pm on November 5 with a view to highlight the philosophies of mystic bard Lalon. It started with a discussion focused on the present state of Baul songs across the country and the need to preserve them.

Sheikh Mofizur Rahman, founder of Baul Tori, presided over the first day’s discussion on the topic while Secretary of Planning Bhuinya Safiqul Islam was chief guest. Director of BSA, Liaqat Ali Lucky, Abdul Matin Pradhan, folk researcher Akira Munakata, ATM Momtajul Karim and Shahjahan Bhandari were present as special guests.

The main attraction of the festival was the second session which featured renditions of Baul songs. Singers from all over the country performed till 9pm.The first part of the evening featured songs by the local bards and others sang Lalon songs. In total more than 20 bards performed in the first day.

On the second day, another discussion was held at the venue. The discussion centred on Lalon’s life and works. Bards from different districts and Dhaka rendered songs in the evening.

Shahnaz Mukti mesmerised the audience with three songs  – “Radhelo Tor Bhalobasha,” “Bichar Korle Shobai Pagol” and “Emon Manob Jonom Ar Hobe Na.”

“Loke Bole Ami Naki Ghor Chhara” by Alam Sarker, “Ami To More Jabo” by Osman Udas, “Bhul Kori Nai” by Jamal Dewan, “Badhia Mayadore” by Sultan Dewan, “Raat Pohale Pakhi Bole Dere Khai Dere Khai” by Baul Alamgir Sarker played to a full house at the festival. The festival was directed by Naima Hossain Pori and S M Mosharraf Hossain.

Thirteen bards were awarded at the closing ceremony of the festival – Momotaz Begum MP, Romjan Ali, Abdul Kadir Molla, Matal Kobi Razzak Dewan, Abdus Sattar Mohonto,

Baul pagla Bachchu, AKM Enayat Kabir, Jahanara Kabir Shila, Shah Alam Sarker, Mohammad Fakhrul Alam, Fakhruddin Ahmed, Shamim Ahmed and Abdul Hafiz.
