After sixteen years, eminent artist Goutam Chakraborty is holding a solo exhibition at the Galleri Kaya in Uttara. This is his fifth solo show, with the title “I am” and it is being considered one of the hot events of the current art circuit in the country.
The eye-catching exhibition will continue till October 11.
The title of the exhibition “I am” is a representation of Goutam’s love, devotion, anger, despair and more. He depicted the artwork as his own reflection of his thought process.
Goutam’s last show was held in 1997 at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The artist’s working style is distinguishable, as he takes a long time to perfect his work.
Through devotion and determination, Goutam’s art pieces are arranged in a perfect manner. The artist said: “The primary reason to exhibit my artworks after a long time is that I need to have an intense attachment with my art pieces. There is no fixed time to give them the finest finish.
It is my attachment that leads the art piece to its finest finish.” In his recent work, 15 water colours were done in semi-realistic, semi-abstract, surrealistic modes in 2004 and 27 oil paintings, six charcoals and 10 drawings along with 10 serigraph were done between 2009-2013.
The artist’s inspiration is derived from poetry and sometimes music, as the artist comments: “When I paint, I recite poems or listen to music, it might reflect in my artwork.” Unlike his four other exhibitions, which were miniature paintings mostly in watercolour, the current exhibition brings considerable change to his themes.
Working on large canvases, Goutam’s trademarks are Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, elephants, horses, cats, and his favourite poet Sudhindranath Datta.
In his recent exhibition, he presents a series of paintings on the theme “Angry Cat” depicting the anguish of ordinary people, including the artist himself, against the backdrop of ongoing social anomalies. The series has been done in serigraph where cats, with their articulated expressions, show bitterness and rage. These angry cats seek attention, which infringe upon their value in society. Goutam is politically conscious artist who delivers social messages through his artwork.
Goutam is the owner of Galleri Kaya in Uttara.
