The 64th birth anniversary of Natyacharya Selim Al Deen is tomorrow and his troupe Dhaka Theatre has chalked out a two-day celebration that begins today.
Selim Al Deen Foundation and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) are jointly associating the troupe to organise the event. A seminar on Selim Al Deen’s masterpiece “Nimajjan” and staging of Deen’s two other landmark plays “Chaka” and “Dhaboman” are featured in the event.
The event will begin with the seminar which will be held at the Seminar Hall of BSA at 3pm today.
Young and dynamic theatre director Sudip Chakroborthy has recreated “Chaka” which has been popularised by Dhaka Theatre since long back and seasoned theatre actors of the troupe perform in the play. Sudip, a faculty member of the theatre department of Dhaka University, is coming up with the play with young students of the department. “Chaka” will premiere today at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA. This is for the first time Dhaka University Theatre Department has produced a play Deen.
Tomorro, “Dhaboman” directed by Shimul Yousuf will be staged at the same venue at 7 pm. The cast includes Esha Yousuf, Shimul Yousuf, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Rosy Siddiqui, Chandan Chowdhury, Nasrin Nahar, Jayasree Bandyopadhyay, Sajjad Ahmed and Asaduzzaman Aman.
“Dhaboman significantly deals with an indigenous community’s beliefs and myths as well as features harmony among people of different religions.
Set in a village by the Someshwari River in the greater Mymensingh area, the The storyline of “Dhaboman” is simple: the birth of a buffalo calf named Sohrab, which the owner Nahbat treats like his own son but ultimately sacrifices when Sohrab becomes an adult buffalo. The message is also simple: death is inevitable and every creature must taste bitter death in the world. But the insightful playwright portrayed the message with unparallel creativity and wisdom.
