Folk art on display at La Galerie

A folk-art exhibition of Patchitra, dresses, punthi-path is going on at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka.

The exhibition is organised by Viaan, an associate organisation of Bhabnagar Foundation. It will be open to all till May 16, Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 9pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 12pm and 5pm to 9pm.

The dresses on display are mainly for the younger generation, both ladies and gents, also a handful of traditional and contemporary suits for children and adults.

A line of dresses designed by the poet and folklorist Nazmin Mortuza is on display and motifs of some unvoiced but talented “Patua (Pot artists)” is used in her designs. The motifs are block-printed, embroidered and screen-printed on local fabrics.

Designs of Shambhu Acharya, Nikhil Chandra Das, Sushanta Pal, Nazir Hossain is also displayed in the exhibition.

Viaan works for creating awareness on local traditions through fashionable dresses and produce dresses made of handloom, with local motif of artisans.

A portion of the earnings from the exhibition will be spent for the development of the impoverished performers and artists involved.

Eminent artist Qayyum Chowdhury, former professor, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka inaugurated the exhibition. In the opening ceremony, a composition of modern dresses with traditional painting along with Potgaan (painting based song) performance was presented by Viaan.
