Hands on with new P9

Update : 15 Jun 2016, 05:33 PM

The new Huawei P9 is a nice little throw back in the design department. With the nostalgic take on the early days of Leica cameras. You have your obvious spec upgrades but nowadays, it’s all about what one phone might have over the other. What advantages can one smartphone have over the other? What does this lack or why does that have too much of something? Huawei thought it to be smart to have a dual lens Leica camera on the back of their smartphone. This clearly has to be the biggest highlight for the P9.

Design

It should be said, this could be an acquired taste for those who put design first above all. There’s this slight homage to the elegance of the 80s at the top and bottom at the front of the phone. Throw yourself back a couple of decades, imagine playing with this device in your new Mercedes-Benz 450SL. In other words, it may not capture your attention right away. Let’s be honest, it’s not the sexiest Android smartphone. Although, the design is quite appropriate, given who they have teamed up with.

The P9 is the same size as its predecessor the P8. Its sharp and balanced 5.-inch display, makes the phone very comfortable to hold. The 1920x1080 display is brilliantly crisp, especially at its brightest settings. Even with carrying a pixel density of 423ppi, there wouldn’t be a single complaint for your viewing pleasure. It’s slim, light, the size is standard and there’s no radical design change to make you reluctant to take it out of your pocket. The same can be said for its elegant user interface, icon, themes and all.

Performance

Powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it houses an octa-core Kirin 955 processor, 3GB of RAM and an eye-pleasing Emotion UI custom interface. These specs only complement the dual lens, 12-megapixel rear cameras. We don’t need to tell you that it cranks out some impressive photos, especially those in black and white. The front 8-megapixel does a decent job as well. Is it the best camera on an Android phone? Of course not, however, this is a step in the right direction.

Apart from its impressive image taking quality, the phone itself is an absolute joy to use. The navigation is very smooth; you can feel its power running from one app to the other. Games load quickly, streaming movies or videos is sexy smooth and photo editing in Snapspeed makes things even easier. With a 3,000mAh battery, you’ll have no trouble using this phone throughout the day. But keep one thing in mind, using the camera or playing games often will actually take its toll. Use this phone wisely.
