Apple has always been secretive about its future products and new iPhones features are one of their closely guarded secrets.
The latest iPhones will likely be announced sometime in September at the yearly Apple event.
However, every year like clockwork there are several websites that leak photos from the factory and predict what features will be included in the new phone.
So far, this is what we know about the much anticipated phone.
Aesthetics
Leaks suggest that the regular iPhone 14 will look fairly similar to the regular iPhone 13, with some improved specs and features of course.
According to Phonearena, there won’t be a mini version in the upcoming 14 series anymore but the number of iPhones will still remain at four.
The base version will be a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, which will be the continuation of the iPhone 11, 12 and 13.
Then, there will be an additional 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, with a bigger display, dual camera and a bigger battery.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro will have a triple-camera setup with all the existing features in a manageable size.
The best one among the lot is the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, which will come with all the premium features and longer battery life.
While nothing much has changed in terms of the aesthetics of most of the models, rumours strongly suggest that the traditional iPhone notch will be different in the Pro models.
According to the leaks, both the Pro and Pro Max models will come with a pill and punch hole cutouts on top. The punch hole cutout will be the front camera while the pill-shaped cutout will hold all the necessary sensors including the FaceID sensors.
These rumours were given more credence with what appears to be a leaked supply chain photo showing off the display panels for all four iPhone 14 models, according to Tom’s Guide.
About the iPhone Max model, it will give consumers a bigger display without spending as much as an iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the sacrifice of the mini version will also stink.
I would have supported this move from Apple if the sacrifice wasn’t made.
Colours
One of the sources said there will be a Midnight, a Starlight and another Product Red colour for the iPhone 14s. The source also said that the current blue colour will be swapped out for a lighter sky blue colour.
There was a leak of a new lilac option coming in, which was later deleted. So, it is difficult to determine how reliable that is.
A more recent leak from an iPhone 14 tipster revealed all the possible colours for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone 14 is said to be coming in Green, Purple, Blue, Black, White and Red.
While the iPhone 14 Pro is slated for Purple, Green, Silver and Graphite.
Display
A leak from Shadow_Leak claims that the iPhone 14 will have a 6.08-inch display (rounded up to 6.1 inches) and the iPhone 14 Max with have a 6.68-inch panel (rounded up to 6.7 inches).
That's the same as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The thing is though, the Pro models could be getting slightly larger (to 6.12 inches and 6.69 inches respectively) because of the new bezels, according to Tom’s Guide.
Given that the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a 120Hz refresh rate display, it would be great to see all iPhone 14 models have such a screen.
However, knowing Apple, I don’t think that they will give it all.
A more recent rumour says that the standard iPhone 14 models (iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max) will get a 90Hz refresh rate display.
I believe that Apple will keep giving the 120Hz refresh rate display for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, for the regular and Max versions, I think they will stay with either 60Hz or go up to 90Hz.
Security
Sadly, the leaks do not show any clue about the return of TouchID in the iPhone 14 series.
However, that’s not entirely bad news as with iOS 15.4, Apple has made FaceID capable enough to recognize a face even with a mask on.
It works so well that it can be said that Apple has bypassed the need for a fingerprint-based biometric.
Camera
As per one of the famous Apple insiders Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning a massive camera upgrade for the iPhone 14 family.
Notably, Apple is planning to bring a new and much larger sensor for the main camera, a massive 1/1.3-inch 48MP sensor. This sensor is expected to grace the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max flagships, according to Phonearena.
Some schematics show the iPhone 14 Pro models with a raised camera array. That also supports Ming-Chi Kuo’s claim of a larger module, which will be needed to house a 48MP camera.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, all versions of Apple’s iPhone 14 are also expected to get better selfie cameras.
Performance
A range of rumours has suggested that Apple will stick to the A15 bionic chipset for their iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max devices.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro models (Pro and Pro Max) are expected to get the new A16 chip.
This move seems a little disappointing to me. If this happens, the consumers who are currently using the regular versions of iPhone 12 or 13 will have very little to no reason to upgrade to the base version of iPhone 14.
Will iPhone 14 be a success?
As some of you already know, the European Union (EU) has been pushing Apple to move to USB-C ports for a while now, and Apple is delaying the implementation and sticking with their lightning ports.
It does not seem like Apple will be changing their iPhone charging ports in the iPhone 14 but they will definitely do it in iPhone 15.
For a smartphone brand like Apple, changing the charging port is a big deal and if words go out, people using iPhone 12 or 13 will most likely refrain from buying the iPhone 14 and wait till iPhone 15 releases.
Then again, Apple, a company popularly known for hating ports will most likely go towards full wireless charging anyways within the next few years, and charging ports may not affect their overall smartphone business at all.
