If you hold a managerial position at work or are pursuing a manager role, you can get ahead by adopting a strategic leadership style. A strategic leader is someone who can express the vision for the organisation, or a part of the organisation, is able to motivate and persuade others to espouse that vision.
Despite the rising number of managers worldwide claiming to be leaders, few actually possess the true expertise of a strategic leader. Many people claim the qualities of a leader without really knowing what needs to be done. One needs to have self-control, ample talent and energy, compassion, social skills and the ability to ingrain one’s vision onto the organisational culture.
Exhibiting traits of a strategic leader is a challenge for most people. Being able to effectively disperse the organisation’s vision to the entire organisation in an amicable manner is more easily said than done. So what does it really take to become a strategic leader? The following are three simple steps.
Know your mission
Before setting a strategy, develop a sound understanding of your mission. Instead of getting caught up in the sophisticated and jargon-laden it company mission statements, define in simple words: what you do, what your company does and for whom. Remember that only by knowing your purpose can you design the right strategies. A simple mission that is easily understandable is strategically the best mission.
Make sure it’s based on a vision
Once you understand the mission of your organisation, you need to set your goals for the future. These goals are what will set your strategies in place. When you move from one point of time to another, you will need specific courses of action.
Get it done
After understanding your mission and developing it, you have to plan on setting things in motion. You should ask yourself if you are ready to execute your vision. The strategy will move your plan from one point to another. Hence if you do not know how to act on your plans, you will not be able to achieve your goals.
Once again, remember that it is the simplest strategies that work best, because they are easy to execute. Before establishing yourself as a strategic leader, ask yourself: why you are here, where you are going and what you need to do to get there.
