As I pay my tribute to Ulfat Kabir -- the most popular and loved magician in our country, my heart sinks to think we will never see the ever-smiling face … fondly known as "Magic Uncle." His silent departure on March 4, 2023 left a void that can never be replaced.
His love for magic was unparallel and it was evident from the passionate way he performed, the way he talked about it, and the way he passed on the skill and knowledge to enthusiasts in this field. Magic for him was not just a performing art -- it was "an art of living." That was the reason for his extreme dedication, commitment and keenness to share the art with others.
Ulfat Kabir was an ardent social worker and a mentor, whose art of magic had a positive impact on countless lives in Bangladesh and around the world. His generous nature brought unlimited joy into the lives of innocent hearts.
His magic was never focused solely on entertainment. Through his talent, he conveyed messages for raising awareness on issues that obstructed social development in Bangladesh. He was a pioneer in the concept of "birthday magic" in Bangladesh. This concept gained so much popularity that children and adults equally wished for magic shows to be included in the list of entertainment activities at parties and picnics.
He also taught magic in schools in Bangladesh and tried to institutionalize this special skill. His extraordinary talent enabled him to teach magic at the American International School in Dhaka for over 12 years. He strongly believed that magic could help children develop various skills, including creativity, problem-solving, and public speaking.
I recall with a grateful heart his support to me when I used to work for the World Food Program(WFP) in Bangladesh. He was the one who helped us develop positive health behaviour among school children through his magic shows in schools that were located in the remote parts of Bangladesh.
He was not also behind, when it came to the virtue of a good friend. All those in need found him beside them. Such personality traits do prove his magnanimity, and needless to say, he was able to touch many people's lives.
In today's world, when people are mostly indifferent to ethical values, it was Ulfat Kabir, who only yearned to see the art of magic reach newer heights in Bangladesh. He was highly respected because he knew how to respect others, even others in the same profession. He was so knowledgeable (not only in his own field but also in literary and other aspects) yet he never tried to show off. His humility ordained his personality.
This magician had his own special way of winning hearts. Not only with his talent and skill but with his pleasant bearing, decent manners, giving nature, power of positivity, and progressive thinking. So his fans were not limited to any specific age group or background. He definitely stood out in a crowd.
His departure gives me all the reasons to mourn, but I choose to celebrate his life. He lived with dignity; his life was worth following. Let his passing away not put an end to this amazingly fabulous life -- rather continue to inspire generations to come.
He was undeniably the best magician but more than that, he was a beautiful human being. Rest in peace, Magic Uncle. You have only left this materialistic world -- you will live on in million hearts.
