Chittagong lawmaker Moslem Uddin Ahmed passes away

He was suffering from terminal cancer

Ruling party lawmaker from the Chittagong-8 constituency Moslem Uddin Ahmed has passed away at the age of 73. 

He died while undergoing treatment at the capital's Evercare Hospital at around 12:47am on Monday. 

Ahmed was suffering from terminal cancer for two years, said the lawmaker's nephew Lokman Chowdhury.

Ahmed was appointed as the vice president of the Government College of Commerce, Chittagong unit of Chhatra League in 1969. 

He was then appointed as the general secretary of the Chittagong unit of Chhatra League, and the acting general secretary of the student wing in 1970.

Ahmed took part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh 1971, and the country was liberated, he was appointed as the general secretary of the Chittagong unit of Chhatra League in 1972.

He was the incumbent president of the Chittagong South District Unit of Bangladesh Awami League. 

On January 13, 2020, Ahmed was elected as a member of the parliament from Chittagong-8 constituency. 

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Moslem Uddin.

In a message of condolence, she said: “Bangladesh Awami League has lost a dedicated leader with the demise of Moslem Uddin."

Recalling his contribution to the Awami League, the prime minister said Moslem Uddin was elected vice president (VP) of the Government Commerce College in 1969 and joined the Liberation War at the directive of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
