Bangla Academy Award winning novelist Dilara Hashem has died. She was 86.
She breathed her last at her home in Washington, United States on Saturday.
Dilara Hashem received the Bangla Academy Award in 1976.
The author had long worked for the Voice of America (VOA) where she joined as a radio broadcaster in 1982.
Prior to that, she worked as a part-time radio broadcaster for the VOA for several years.
Before going to the US, she used to read Bangla news on BBC.
Dilara had also worked at Radio Pakistan in Karachi and Dhaka Betar and Bangladesh Television before joining BBC.
Born on August 21, 1936, in Jessore, Dilara graduated in 1956 from the English department at Dhaka University in 1956.
Her novel “Ghor Mon Janala”, published in 1965, was made into a drama under the title “Balaka Mon”. It was translated into Russian and Chinese languages.
Her other novels include “Ekoda Ebong Ananta”, “Stabdhatar Kaane Kaane”, “Amlakir Mou”', “Shonkho Karat” etc. She also wrote a number of short stories and poems.
