When the world went into lockdown in March, one of the earliest social media trends involved photographs, memes and paintings of stunning skyscapes as a housebound global population began to express their longing for freedom by looking to the skies.
Bangladeshi singer-songwriter and freelance painter Rashid Khan was already a step ahead. He had embarked on a personal project to travel to different countries and paint the skies from each location for a painting series. He had only completed three paintings when the pandemic hit. Undeterred, he continued to paint the sky in its different moods as viewed from his home’s balcony and office in Dhaka. To his surprise, by the end of July 2020, he had completed a series of some 40 sky paintings.
He recently exhibited the series, titled Rowing in Blue. The paintings represent snapshotsof early morning, evenings with yellow clouds, full moon, sunset and more. The artist tried to be accurate calculating the axes and degrees to determine geographical reference points considering time.
Although a businessman by profession, Rashid has been pursuing passion in art for over 25 years. His artworks are in a few different genres and media, mostly covering abstract and expressionism. He hasrecently launched his art venture ‘’MNRIK’, where people can find all his artworks and from where he will exhibit his upcoming exhibition in October on his Charcoal works.
